Originating in the Purépecha community of Cocucho in Michoacán, Mexico, Cocucho pots—traditionally known as cocuchas—are distinguished by their substantial size, rounded forms, and centuries-old pottery-making techniques.
Each vessel is formed by hand using coils of locally sourced clay rather than a pottery wheel or mold. Artisans gradually build the walls, smooth and burnish the surface using simple tools such as river stones and corncobs, and fire the finished pottery over an open wood fire.
The firing process is particularly distinctive. Exposure to flame, smoke, and varying temperatures creates natural variations in color, ranging from warm terracotta and reddish brown to deep charcoal and black. These irregular markings are characteristic of traditional Cocucho pottery, making each vessel unique in appearance.
This coordinating set of three features the traditional rounded bodies, narrowed necks, and flared openings associated with Cocucho pottery. Differences in surface texture, coloration, and finish are part of the character of these vessels.
